Miraflores, modern building and amazing landscapes

Miraflores is a very secure district, and there are lots of cultural activities, which makes it one of the first destination for tourists. It was founded as a district by the President Ramon Castilla in 1857. It was initially named as San Miguel de Miraflores, but then the name was shortened to just Miraflores.

Main Attractions

Larcomar
Larcomar is a popular commercial center located practically next to the beach. It has a wide array of restaurants, discos, shops, bowlings, bars and cinemas. It is visited everyday by lots of families and young people looking for fun.

The Beaches
Lots of beautiful beaches, including Las Piedritas, La Estrella, La Pampilla, Punta Roquitas and Los Delfines.

Miraflores Downtown
Miraflores has a wonderful big park located right in the center of the district. Many events take place in this park, including concerts and cultural events. At night, there are many discos available, and the restaurants stay open till late.

Miraflores is a secure district, but it's also considered one of the most expensive districts in Lima.

Museo Nacional de Antropología, Arqueología e Historia

Founded by Julio C. Tello in 1938; exhibition of the biggest historical collection in Peru, more than 100 thousand pieces, from all the Peruvian cultures, ordered in didactic and chronological way. Ceramic pieces, metallic pieces, fabrics, funeral bales, sculptures carved in stone, etc.

Outstanding collections of the cultures Chavín, Paracas, Nazca, Mochica, Huari, Chimú, Sicán and Inca.

Located in the same plaza is the house that was residence of the Viceroys Pezuela and La Serna and the Liberators José de San Martín and Simón Bolívar. Are exhibited collection of paintings, objects, documents and relics corresponding to the Viceroyalty, Emancipation, Independence and Republican Eras.

In archaeology, I can recommend you the following journey:

  • "Galería de los Orígenes" (Gallery of the Origins), pieces and remains of old Peruvian hunters.
  • "Galería Formativa" and "Sala Chavín" (Formative gallery and Chavín Room), show of the first pre-Inca cultures.
  • "Sala Lima" (Lima room), samples of pre-Inca cultures of the central coast of Peru, highlight the collections of Nazca and Paracas.
  • Sector of the cultures Recuay, Pashash and Caxamarca.
  • "Sala Moche" (Moche Room). Rich collection of Culture Mochica.
  • Sector of the Tiahuanaco, Lima and Wari cultures.
  • "Sala Metalurgia y Maestros Orfebres" (Metal and Jewelry rooms). Gold, silver and other metal pieces of diverse pre-Hispanic cultures collection.
  • "Sala de Textiles Precolombinos" (Pre-columbine textiles room). Show of beautiful fabrics of pre-Hispanic cultures.
  • "Sala Chimú, Sicán y Chancay" (Chimú, Sicán, and Chancay room) exhibition of excellent pieces belonging to these cultures.
  • "Sala Arquitectura y Urbanismo" (Architecture and urban style room). Exhibition of big constructions in scale of models of pre-columbine cultures, such as Machu Picchu, Wiñaywayna, Tambo Colorado, etc., works in scale of the famous Ccosi Salas.

Church and Sanctuary of Santa Rosa (Tacna avenue, 1st block)

Built on the place in which Isabel Flores de Oliva was born (1568-1617), Santa Rosa de Lima was canonized by the Pope Clemente X in 1671, called the Landlady of Lima, America, Philipines and Oriental India.

In the garden is conserved the hermitage that Santa Rosa built with the help of her brother and the well where she threw the key of the chain that stuck to her waist in sign of penance. All the devoted parishioners who visit this well, write their wishes on a piece of paper and then throw them to the well attributing miraculous character.

Church of La Merced (De la Unión Street)


Built between 1607 and 1615. Temple of three naves, its portal is a masterpiece carved in granite brought from Panama, with bent columns of Baroque style. In its interior the walls and archs are decorated with cushioneds and modillions. In the main altar "Virgen de las Mercedes" is worshipped with a magnificent gold scepter, Peruvian Landlady of Weapons and also have the title of Marshal. In the right nave is located the remains of "Padre Urraca", in scent of sanctity whose cross is venerated being attributed many miracles.

Church of San Pedro (Azángaro Street, corner with Ucayali).

Jesuit temple, built in 1624, of three naves, with portal exquisitely carved in stone, outstanding for its arcade and altars made with gold leafs in Churrigueresque Baroque style in its lateral naves. The altars of San Ignacio de Loyola and of Santa Lucía are a masterpiece, beautiful colonial paintings in their two chapels. It is the main temple in Lima and during the Colony was the church of the aristocracy.

Church and Convent of Santo Domingo (Conde de Superunda Street, corner with Camana Street)

Built at the end of the XVI century. In the church, Basilica del Rosario, the tower has a peculiar architectural style; in the left altar is worshipped Virgin del Rosario, in the right side are worshipped the Peruvian saints Santa Rosa de Lima, San Martin de Porres and San Juan Masías. The silver urns that keep the relics of these saints are under each one of these images. The convent is one of the best-conserved in Lima. In the cloisters the Baroque style prevail with morisaca influence, with tile baseboards and decorations in the windows.
